Until September 28, in the cloister of Fréjus cathedral, the Centre des monuments nationaux is presenting a selection of 3 photographs of cathedral roofs and roof timbers.

Following the fire at Notre Dame de Paris, the French Ministry of Culture commissioned the Centre des Monuments Nationaux to immortalize the attic and roof structure heritage of 87 French cathedrals owned by the State.

Following a call for applications, 8 photographers were selected to enter these confidential places and take pictures for both a conservation and an artistic mission: Clément Guillaume, Thomas Jorion, Laurent Kruszyk, François Lauginie, Pascal Lemaître, Alexis Paoli, Xavier Spertini and Patrick Tourneboeuf .

Taking these photos was a real technical feat, given both the physical constraints of accessing the attic and the photographic requirements. Equipped with large-format digital cameras, mounted on tripods with exposure times ranging from several seconds to several minutes, the photographers had to overcome the almost total absence of light. Each developed his or her own lighting technique: LEDs or flashlights used like brushes to reveal volumes in the dark.

Relive a centuries-old tradition! The Descente des Radeliers de la Durance plunges you into the heart of history, with a re-enactment of 19th-century timber rafting.

The Descente des Radeliers de la Durance is a not-to-be-missed event that celebrates an essential part of local history. Every year at the end of May, the "Les Radeliers de la Durance" association revives the ancestral practice of transporting wood from the mountains to the Mediterranean via the Durance River.

During two days of festivities, admire the handcrafted construction of the rafts, faithful reproductions of those used in the past, with their traditional plant ties. Follow the route of the rafters, dressed in period costumes, as they brave the waters of the Durance, recreating the perilous voyage of the "freshwater sailors".

Several stages punctuate the descent, offering spectacular views: the Rabioux wave at Châteauroux-les-Alpes, a renowned spot for whitewater sports, the Pont-Neuf and the Embrun dyke. It's a unique opportunity to discover the region's cultural and natural heritage, while sharing a moment of conviviality and collective memory.
